Q1. How does 2257 MAVIS operate on a network?

Answer: 2257 MAVIS is network capable by default.
The recommended network implementation is via a shared data resource on your designated 2257 computer as opposed to a network file server / client network topology.

You can use a named share in one of several different ways; a mapped drive letter (F: through Z:), a network named resource such as \\server_name\share or even Universal Naming Convention as http://192.168.x.x/share_name.  The main point being that the main location for the data files should be on the computer designated as your 2257 recordkeeping computer.

A network fileserver, while technically the ideal scenario for a normal database application, is not recommended for legal reasons relating to the rules of evidence and discovery during the inspection / investigation process.

Use of the recommended network strategy can help you ease the workload for manual data entry of your model identification information prior to processing with the 2257 MAVIS Spider Import, particularly if you have a large number of models to enter into the system.  Actual processing of the Spider Import requires exclusive access to the data files and therefore does not support network operation.

Q2. What is the difference between the 'Basic' edition and the 'Spider' edition?

Answer: Functionally, the difference between the two versions is the ability to import information obtained from your web site processed by the MAVIS Web Spider.

Once you purchase the 2257 MAVIS Spider Edition (or the Spider Edition Upgrade) you will receive a special PHP script to execute on your web server to collect specific information regarding the production files on your web server.

Then, using the 2257 MAVIS Spider Import Wizard, this information is processed, model assignments are made, production naming and URL history records are created and automatically imported into the database.

The 2257 MAVIS Spider edition effectively eliminates approximately 90 percent of the typing you would normally have to do to complete your 2257 recordkeeping tasks if you were to attempt to do them manually.

Q. What if you get hit by a bus? What happens to my software investment?

Answer: We have a software escrow service available that will safeguard a current copy of the source code for you (at a reasonable additional cost) and should the need arise, determined by contractual agreement, it will be released to a competent developer who is well versed in the development language used to develop 2257 MAVIS in order to ensure the longevity of your software investment and continuation of maintenance and / or enhancements.

Q4. What are the minimum system requirements for 2257 MAVIS?

Answer: 2257 MAVIS Basic edition may be run on a Windows 98 based computer with as little as 32 Mb of RAM.  However, we recommend that you use Windows XP Home or Professional with a minimum available memory of 384 Mb of RAM. The use of a flatbed or card scanner is recommended as the input device for obtaining images of photo ids although it is not mandatory to do so. There are no specific hardware or microprocessor requirements for the software.

2257 MAVIS Spider Edition uses an extensive amount of memory for dynamically allocated table processing and should be run on a computer with as much memory as possible to ensure the Spider Import process is as rapid as possible.

We are currently re-engineering the Spider Import process to use disk based tables in a very near future release of the software to decrease the memory requirements.

Once this re-engineering is accomplished, the memory and minimum system requirements will match that of the 2257 MAVIS Basic edition.
